Introduction

Ulew Tinimit is a well established school in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala and is recognized by the Ministry of Education and the Guatemala Tourist Commission. The school was founded in l992 with the vision of contributing to the development of our country through our own efforts and in collaboration with the participants in our programs.

The primary focus of the Center is the teaching of Spanish as a second language and Mayan languages are also taught. Our community and volunteer projects support local development at many different levels and allow our students to interact directly with Guatemalan culture.

Our basic principles are:

• To provide effective education of Spanish as a second language.
• To give students and volunteers an insight into the Mayan culture
• To create new and support existing jobs
• To coordinate and encourage groups, cooperatives and communities in their self-development

With 15 years experience in providing language tuition, we offer a friendly and relaxed environment in which to learn. We make every effort to ensure that our students gain the most out of their time here and we are flexible to the needs of individual students.

5 hours a day

• Levels offered: Beginner to advanced

Accommodation Offered

We provide accommodation with middle class Guatemalan families. We highly recommend living with a family as it's a great cultural experience and also a great way to practice Spanish. The homestay includes three meals a day.

However, we understand that living with a family is not for everyone and therefore there is the option of also living in one of the many hostels in Xela or in an apartment.

Activities and Excursions

We provide a weekly schedule of activities in the afternoons and also weekends. Activities include:

• Salsa Classes

• Cooking Classes

• Visits to nearby towns

• Visits to attractions such as hot springs, chocolate factories, weaving factories, caves etc.

• Visits to the beach

• Hiking

College Credit

College credit is available at this school. We have a contact with the Rural University who provide diplomas to students who successfully complete an exam set by the university.
