Turrialba is actually situated at the very bottom of the Turrialba Volcano, which has been dormant since the first part of the 19th century. The volcano offers opportunity for horse-back riding, hiking and bird watching, especially in the cloud forest that is located on the top parts of the volcano. There are several tours and guides in the area that will even take you to the bottom of one of the volcanic craters, but for those less adventurous there are enjoyable day walks through forest or the less vegetated areas closer to the base of the volcano.

One of the other major attractions of the Turrialba area is the whitewater rafting tours on the Pacuare River. The Spanish schools in Turrialba have access to the best guides and tours and many students choose to take one of these highly exciting and memorable tours on a day off from classes. The whitewater rafting tours have various levels of challenge and difficulty and are also various lengths, ranging from overnight tours to rafting that lasts only a few hours. In addition, the river curves through old lava beds and flows, providing a one-of-a-kind landscape for whitewater rafters and kayakers alike.

The town of Turrialba is a very traditional town with outdoor markets, wonderful outdoor cafes and lots of shops to browse through. The outdoor fruit and vegetable markets run year round in the town and attract people from all over the coastal area. Rawlings baseballs, used for all professional and most amateur games, are manufactured in the town of Turrialba, so there is always something to do with the sport going on in the town. The town also boasts a Serpentarium, which is an educational look at serpents and their role in the ecology of the area. If you prefer to look at the beauty of flowers, a trip to the Lankester Gardens is the perfect outing. The orchids within the garden are world renowned and are truly breathtaking to see.

Tuis is a safe, family-oriented village, where the people are friendly and welcoming. They love to invite visitors to their home to talk over coffee and dessert. Even with very little Spanish they are eager to teach you. As a foreigner, you will feel at home immediately and will know that the village is perfectly safe. The locals are curious and eager to get to know you and will make you feel very welcome.

The village of Tuis is just 20 minutes from Turrialba, which in turn is only an hour and a half from San Jose. The bus from Tuis to Turrialba runs conveniently each hour.
