Just off the beach are more upscale cafes and restaurants. There are many wonderful shops offering local artwork including woodcarvings and Taino art, the primitive and amazingly beautiful art of the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Puerto Rico. As you move towards the center of the city, more formal art galleries and stores are open for browsing. Museums and local interest sites are perfect for spending an afternoon learning local history.
