Quito has many beautiful natural areas to explore just outside of the city. The Volcano Pichincha and the River Machángara provide many different trail and hiking paths for those that enjoy seeing the amazing number of birds, animals and insects that inhabit this warm climate. Trips can be completed individually using one of the many maps available at hotels or travel information centers, or the trips can be done with a guide. Many of the Spanish language schools in Quito provide guided tours to help students learn about the area.

The city of Quito itself is also worth exploring. The old city center is full of amazing architecture, much of it built by the original European settlers to the area. The Panecillo and the Plaza Grande are amazing buildings that are landmarks in the area. There are over two dozen museums in and around Quito, and they are extremely well kept and cared for. Many different monuments, left by both the Jesuits and other groups, are dotted throughout the city. Churches, cathedrals and monasteries complete the historical old town. The other side of Quito is just as amazing. Here is the new city, completely modern and totally opposite to the old city. The difference is amazing, yet the people are still warm and friendly and willing to stop and explain the various sites to visitors and students of the Spanish language schools. In Quito the old world customs still exist, and guests to the area are treated exceptionally.
