Learn Spanish in Queretaro
Queretaro is a state in Mexico that is easily
found just a short two-hour drive from Mexico City. The state
is rich in beautiful scenery, natural hot springs and rich
agricultural regions. The capital city of Queretaro is Santiago
de Queretaro, a great place to learn Spanish. In Queretaro the
people speak mostly Spanish, although English, French, Italian
and German may also be overheard in conversations.
The city of Santiago de Queretaro, or Queretaro
as it is called by locals, is an interesting mixture of Spanish
and Native Indian cultures. If you come to learn Spanish in
Queretaro, you will soon see that the architecture is European,
with many churches, palaces and government buildings still
standing that were built by the Spanish in the years 1500-1600.
The strong Jesuit influence is found in the monasteries and
massive Cathedrals that were built in the city center plaza. In
and around Queretaro there are amazing monuments to the arts
and culture of times long past. One of these remaining
accomplishments is the 74-stone arches of the Aqueduct,
designed to originally bring water into the city. The Aqueduct
was built in 1726 though 1735. The Maths Museum and the Arts
Museum are worth a full day trip each to browse through and
enjoy the amazing displays of both historical and modern arts
and artifacts.

Surrounding the city there are several golf
courses, hiking trails and horseback riding facilities. The
wonderful hilly region allows outdoor enthusiasts to hike to
higher elevations and look down over this remarkable colonial
city. Many of the guides will speak their native language if
this is requested, so this is another great opportunity to
learn Spanish in Queretaro. For shoppers, the mercados and
plazas offer opportunities to purchase various handicrafts and
items from local vendors, while the shops and boutiques offer
more international items. After a day of busy sightseeing,
relax in a quiet international-style fine dining restaurant
located in one of the hotels or off the plaza. Wandering
musicians and groups, known as callejoneadas, will serenade
through the streets singing traditional songs. Dancing and
nightlife is available throughout the city as is live theatre
and even concerts by the Philharmonic Orchestra.
Coming to learn Spanish in Queretaro is a wonderful way to get
to know the people of the area as well as gain an appreciation
of this historical colonial city.
