Situated in the area known as the Costa
Tropical, this seaside resort town has endless beaches, a warm,
tropical climate and great restaurants and entertainment. While
the city of La Herradura is on the coast, the Sierra Nevada
Mountain range makes a dramatic background, plus protects this
tropical paradise from the cold winter winds that cut across
the rest of Spain. The mountains also provide wonderful hiking,
horseback riding and trekking adventures, as well as
opportunities to see native wildlife and birds.
After spending a day attending Spanish courses
in La Herradura it is possible to walk to beautiful seaside
restaurants and outdoor cafes to enjoy amazingly fresh seafood
cooked by professional chefs. For a nice lunch, there is always
the option of going to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in the center
of the city. In addition there are many new chalets and small
hotels that are opening more towards the Sierra Nevada, making
excellent weekend trips to see the beauty of the mountains. For
fishermen, sailors, boaters, divers and water sport
enthusiasts, the many sheltered bays and open waters of the
approximately 19 kilometers of beach area make exceptional day
trips. There are businesses open to rent diving, fishing and
other equipment at very reasonable rates.
While the language most frequently heard in the shops and
markets of La Herradura is Spanish, there are also German,
Dutch, Scandinavian, French, Belgian and English year-round
habitants of this wonderful subtropical area. This mix of
nationalities leads to easy conversations and a chance to
practice what students have learned in Spanish courses in La
Herradura. The open marketplace has an astounding selection of
fruits and produce including fresh harvested herbs that are
grown in the rich mountain soil surrounding the city. For those
interested in delving into the history of the area, the Roman
baths and aqueduct is well worth the trip, as is the San Miguel
Castle, located in the nearby seaside resort area of
Almuñécar.
