We are a small school which prides itself on careful and sustained attention to each student regardless of his or her level of proficiency. Our staff of qualified teachers have ample experience in the field of Spanish as a second language.

At Becari we offer different programs according to the student's individual needs, making it possible to advance more rapidly in one's knowledge and practice of Spanish. We emphasize oral communication, conversation, grammar lessons tailored to the student's level, and a variety of enjoyable and productive language learning exercises.

Oaxaca

The capital of the state of the same name, Oaxaca is located in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains, 500 km south of Mexico City. It has a very pleasant climate throughout the year. This city has been nominated a "World Heritage Site" because of its magnificent architecture.

In the area there are a large number of archaeological sites, which in their time were very important cities. They housed civilizations that had a high level of artistic development, such as the Zapotec and Mixtec. In the state of Oaxaca there is a large and diverse indigenous population. Even today it's possible to appreciate their beautiful handicrafts, their colorful dresses, and to listen to their native languages. All this can be seen and heard in the local markets.

The state of Oaxaca also offers you beautiful beaches, such as those at Puerto Escondido, Puerto Angel, and Huatulco. However the best part of being here is the wonderful hospitality of its residents.

Becari Language School, Oaxaca

Becari A.C. Language School is located in a beautiful two-hundred-year old building. In the center of the school, there is a patio where students can sit and chat before and after class in a peaceful atmosphere. The school has 16 classrooms, which surround the patio, a teachers' room, the accountants office and the director's office. There is also an excellent restaurant and cafe in the building.

The building itself, is conveniently located just a few blocks from Oaxaca’s main square (Zocalo).

Programs Offered

Regular Spanish
Three hours of classes, five days a week, divided into two sessions with a different teacher for each session. The first session includes a review of specific grammar points through dynamic and interactive learning. In the second session, the students practice what they have learned through conversation and practical exercises.

Intensive Spanish
Four hours of classes, five days a week, divided evenly between two teachers. This program allows students to dedicate more time to developing conversational skills.

• Minimum age: 16

Super-Intensive Spanish
Six hours of classes five days a week divided into three sessions, each with a different teacher. There is a fifteen minute break between the first two sessions. This program is recommended for students who do not have a lot of time to spend in Oaxaca and really want to improve their language skills quickly.

Intensive Spanish and Workshops
Four hours of regular Spanish classes five days a week divided into two sessions, each with a different teacher. And two more hours of workshops in the afternoon (weaving and cooking plus ceramics or salsa and folk dancing).

Accommodations

Family Homestay
Becari Language School can arrange for a student to live with a family in Oaxaca during his/her study, which has the following advantages: 

• Forces students to use the language in real situations
• Students are exposed to the language 24 hours a day
• Students get a better idea about Mexican costumes and traditions
• Most rooms are individual unless the student request a double room
• Some houses receive only one student, other families have two or three bedrooms, so they received two or three students at the same time. Students have to request if they want to be the only student in the house
• Students can choose if they want one, two or three meals a day
• Most houses are located close to the school (10-20 minutes walking.)

Other options

• Middle class hotel, with bath: US$20 - US$35 per night.
• 1 room apartment, with kitchen: US$350 - US$500 per month

Activities

• Mexican movie every Friday afternoon for free!
• Cultural Wednesday afternoon free of charge once a week: unique cultural event with local important person!
• "Intercambio" with a local student (1 hour per day, free)
• Possibility of sending E-mail, faxes from the school at low fee and receiving both for free!
• Ceramics: students design their own pieces. They actually make their pieces and Teacher puts the pieces in the oven, students can finish their pieces coloring them in the next class. (Classes cost 100.00 pesos two hours.)
• Weaving: Students work one or two hours to weave their own tapestry. They weave with a waist loom. (Classes are 50.00 pesos an hour and 100.00 pesos the loom)
• Cooking classes: Students learn how to cook typical Oaxacan dishes in a family atmosphere. They go to a family’s house and afterwards eat with the family. (Cost: 100.00 pesos including the meal)
• Tours on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays to different interesting places around Oaxaca. 150.00 pesos per trip per person

College Credit and Recognition

Los Angeles Unified School District has approved and gives point credit on courses taken at Becari.

Bildungsurlaub: Becari is recognized an an accepted training center for German Bildungsurlaub (from the state of Hamburg).

Several Universities give credits to students that take courses at Becari.
